There’s a pressure to occasion shop, right? You know the drill: you get invited to a wedding, a baby shower, or a fancy dinner, and suddenly you feel like you need a whole new wardrobe just to look right for the event. I get it. It’s like furnishing a house in one go, grabbing matching sets from the store to quickly fill the space. But here’s the thing, just like a home filled with matching furniture ends up looking flat and soulless, your closet will feel the same if all it’s packed with is “one-off” outfits.
This is why I don’t do occasion shopping. You don’t need to buy something new for every event. Instead, I believe in shopping seasonally. Every season, I take stock of what’s in my closet, see what’s missing, and make a list of what I actually need. This way, I’m building a curated wardrobe that works for 99% of my life. The 1%? The weddings, vacations, graduations, and those other big events, those things work themselves out when you have a closet that fits your everyday life.
Take Easter, for example. I didn’t rush out to buy a brand new dress. If Easter shopping is a tradition for you, if it’s part of your family’s ritual to have something new, then go ahead, enjoy it! But for me, I didn’t need to go buy something brand new. Instead, I shopped my own closet and chose a soft pastel color palette. I found this Gap shirt that I love and monogrammed with my initials (remember I told you about it in a recent reel?). Paired it with a skirt my mom made for me years ago. I even thought about buying new strappy heels, but in the end, I went with my comfy ballet flats. And you know what? I felt great. It was a perfect outfit, and I didn’t have to stress over buying something new.
Trust me, the ‘new dress for every occasion’ mentality is exhausting and most of the time leaves you with items you wear once, maybe twice, before they gather dust in your closet. So this spring, let’s focus on shopping with intention. Build a closet that works for the real you, the regular, everyday you and let those special events be an extension of your already fabulous wardrobe.
So, take a minute to ask yourself: what do you need this season, and how can you shop smarter, not harder?
