A magical notebook, a creative block and the perfect outfit

picked up that little Pottery Barn pillow at the thrift today and it looks perfect right there

I recently got this notebook and it has unlocked something in me that feels somewhat odd. It’s not a magical notebook. It’s just a spiral (narrow ruled) and the perfect color for readability. It is pretty simple, but it’s the type of simplicity I love to see in design, you know? Where nothing is smoke and mirrors. Every detail serves a purpose and maybe that’s why it’s unlocked in me so many ideas.

It even sparked in me a desire to write a series of poems. But more on that later.

I could let the notebook take the credit, but let’s face it, it’s just a notebook (albeit the one Wes Anderson famously uses to brainstorm all of his movie ideas). So, what is it then? How have I gone creatively blocked for over a year to suddenly not being able to contain all of the ideas?

Margin and consistency.

Creating margin to consistently show up to the page/the studio/the blinking cursor has transformed my creative practice. Even this past year, when I was as backed up as the Chick-fil-a drive-through gets on “dress like a cow” day, I kept showing up where it made sense.

Why am I telling you this? Well, if you’ve lost your spark, or if you feel like you’re all out of ideas… Keep showing up to your creative practice. Don’t have one? Heck, start one.

Don’t let this rectangle light box you’re holding deny you the joy of creating something that may never see the light of day. That, is one of the greatest joys one can have in this life.
