It’s hot. Record high temps here in Virginia. Not sure how the weather is where you’re at, but here, it’s hot. Did I already say that? The kind of hot that if you don’t make it out the door by 7 am for your morning walk, you missed the boat. Even the pool is hot. So what does one wear in this heat?
Here are three outfits I wore lately that helped me feel comfortable both outside and when the AC is blasting ( which after years of living overseas with no central AC I’m grateful for, yet my body just doesn’t always love it).

1 a maxi cotton poplin dress
It’s chic and classic and it works both in the heat outside, as well as the AC inside. The key here is the material and the fit. You want something loose, that doesn’t cling and of course you want a lightweight breathable material. Linen is obviously another great option, but I repeat, it cannot be anything polyester or it defeats the purpose.
A styling trick I enjoyed: adding the scarf for a pop of color. I also wore Havaianas to keep the looks more casual. They are the most comfortable flip flops I’ve ever owned.
If you’re enjoying this post, will you do me a favor and “heart” it at the top of this post? I promise you it helps me so much. Now back to fashion.
2 Shorts and a button-up
Okay, nothing ground-breaking again. But there’s an art, a rhyme and reason for this look: The shorts have to be easy breezy loose shorts like this or this. They must barely make contact with your skin okay? AND DON’T GET ME STARTED ON MOISTURE WICKING FABRICS. The devil himself created this material. Moisture wicking materials do not belong in 101 degree weather unless you’re running a marathon or something. You will be less cranky if you choose a jersey knit, linen or cotton.
The button down may seem counter -intuitive yet again, when it’s nice and loose, barely touching your skin, it works like wool in the desert: keeps your temperature even. You’re cool outside and protected from the artic temperatures of your grocery store inside.
Cotton skirts
My initiation with these skirts started when my mom made me a Laura Ashley-esque midi skirt when I was 11. I wore that yellow floral skirt with a crisp white baby tee and some keds. I realized then how skirts felt INCREDIBLE to wear in the heat of a Brazilian summer and never went back. I’m partial to a billowy a-line midi probably because it reminds me so much of that original skirt. But also, when it’s 150 degrees out, having fabric that won’t cling to you is KEY.
I love pairing my skirts with a good tee. A tank top works but again, for my perpetually cold self in artic AC rooms, the sleeves offer a bit of comfort. Lol. My personal preference is a slightly heavier weight tee with a boxy feel to break up the girly flow of the skirt. I recently got this charcoal one as a sample for my shop and I’m obsessed. What do you think? Should I add it to Freguesa’s lineup?
What is your go to look when it’s 100 billion degrees out? I linked everything here so you can easily shop this post.
Adding another little section to our newsletter, this week’s highs and lows:
High: staying off social media for the Summer continues to be a gift that keeps on giving. I’m loving the freedom to create slower, more thoughtful content.
Another high, I’ll be in Blowing Rock, NC for a pop-up at The Stable next week. I’ll have tons of upcycled pieces and a brand new necklace design!
Low: I’ve been going through what I’m lovingly calling “a mid-life crisis”. It’s something I’ve been processing in my soul care sessions, which has been immensely helpful. It’s been a lot of undoing the way I’ve always worked : goals! deadlines! conquer the world! to shifting to this slower, maybe an empire is not what I’m looking to build mentality. It’s a low because it’s hard work but it’s actually been a real gift.
Hope you’re having a fantastic week,
xx Priscila
